Whoever wrote these songs for this show deserves an Emmy.

I totally remember this song growing up - I then managed to piss off my 5th grade teacher when I actually tried to do this on an assignment rather than manually listing out each option like they wanted me to. PBS for the win! ;-)

Funny story with this. I was really bad at math and had a math tutor in 2nd grade. One time I asked her what combinatorics was. She's like where did you hear that? I told her "square one tv" she thought it was ridiculous. "You can't learn anything watching tv" I told her it's on PBS at (whatever time it was) the next day when I came in she was like " keep watching that show!" It was the first time I ever proved an adult wrong 😂

Somebody should bring this, and many other excellent PBS Kids shows from the '80s and '90s, out on DVD ASAP.

Use combinatorics, a faster way to count
Use combinatorics, you can multiply the amounts.
Use combinatorics, it’s so easy to do
    Use combinatorics when you need
to let the numbers work for you

Thanks so much for posting this. I'd been wondering what this song was called. It's still very catchy. The title sounds different than she's singing. These videos should be on DVD. A soundtrack album would sell great.

Wow I know her best for the MCGruff psa, and her 1986 hit Baby Love. I did not know she did this too.

Looks as though Regina and her bandmates have way too much on their hands, LOL, super-cool song (to boot!) =)
Just why isn't there a CD of SOTV music videos? Since this is from the creators of Sesame Street and the Electric Company (both of which have already done plenty of merchandise tie-ins, CD's and vinyl LP's among them), a CD showing the music of SOTV would really go flying off the retail shelves. Music like this really is timeless (and the vid here is also a bona fide classic). :-)

That's true greymattersblog. And furthermore, you might have less than 7 bands that you can hire out at the same time because combinatorics don't take into account the musicians who refuse to play together because they don't like each other . But you have to admit, this is a cool song. It's got a great beat and it's easy to dance to.

Fun song! Educational too:-) This is the first time I've ever seen Regina without the colorful tubes that the usually wears in her hair.

I believe by the end of 1987, she stopped using them. Because by 88, the 80's fashion scene was starting to fade or become gritty.

My favourite Square One song of all time! I could NOT stop singing this after it aired. I wanted SO badly for CTW to release a soundtrack with this on it.
And Regina was SO hot to my budding hormones. That face, that hairstyle, and that hip shake in those stretch pants. Combo Jombo indeed!! ❤❤❤❤❤

If i want to know how many octets I can make with 5 Keyboards, 4 Basses, 7 Drums, 6 Guitars, 4 Saxophones, 7 Tambourines, 6 Trumpets, and 5 Cymbals
    I multiply 5×4×7×6×4×7×6×5

    • @bryanloveseighties
      @bryanloveseighties Год назад

You're going to have a whole lot of octet bands on your hands. It all multiplies up to 705,600 bands.

You could have a sextet of 6 drummers. That would be a great group.

    A. Suppose you have to form a Final Fantasy party of 4 members and there are six possible classes to choose: Fighter, Black Belt, Thief, Red Mage, Black Mage, White Mage. You can use more than one of any class and order doesn't matter (e.g. Fighter/Fighter/Black Mage/White Mage is considered identical to Black Mage/Fighter/White Mage/Fighter). How many possible parties of 4 using 6 classes are there?
    B. Does a function of six variables have the same number of unique fourth derivatives?

Of course, in practice some of the combinations might not work well. Maybe a drummer and a guitarist recently broke up, or maybe a saxophonist and a keyboardist allow their political differences to interfere with their teamwork.
